Oh, I am so in love with this place. This tiny, old New Mexico “town” is one of my favorite stops. Great pies. Friendly people. I put quotes around “town” because it is just a wide place on a tiny 2 lane road. The library is out of town, on a farm. The post office is tiny and very old.
The pies are beyond expectations at The Gathering Place. The pies are ~5″ in diameter. Enough for 2 people at one sitting. There are many, many choices of pies and a large breakfast/lunch menu.
While camping on a tight budget ya gotta binge every once in a while. This is my go to splurge spot. There is free camping (3 nights at the city park with water and pit toilet). The city park is adjacent to free BLM camping for 14 days, so 17 total days free = 2 pies.
Next I will head north to the Colorado high mountains to be a camp host until mid September. Have you ever thought about being a camp host?
Truck Camper Hints 
We would like to be able to come out west and our children see the sites. We figured we would start our first time within our state and then next year possibly go somewhere else. Do you stay in one state and this will be your first time going somewhere new or do you travel around from place to place often?

Post office boxes are just like the ones we used to have here in Woody Creek. Much classier !

These old boxes look so sturdy … to me they implied the solidness of the postal service. Wish they were still around.

The next blog will be about the camphosting experience and hints. I will be at a tiny campground in the Dolores district of the San Juan NF. There are 12 campsites, no electricity, a tiny well, on the Dolores River at 9,100′. Its 42 miles from cell service and on dirt roads. Treasured by repeat anglers and retirees who came with their grandparents. Delicious place.

Anywhere near Dunton? That used to be such a fabulous place to rent funky old miners cabins, soak in the hot springs & visit with the elderly brothers who owned the town. Now it’s a 5 star resort you can’t even drive in to look at! I still love that road up the Dolores River & have camped there over the years.

Yes, the camp is about 7 miles above the Dunton hot springs. I have heard lots of stories about the place from old timers who remember the hippie days and mourn the lack of access.
