I drove from Flagstaff to Quartzsite, sweating. Arrived and it was 104 degrees. Love the heat, love the desert, love it that I found “my” spot. $180 for 7 months. There is a pit toilet, a dumpster and potable water nearby. I drank all of my LeCroix drinks, all pineapple juices, all but 1 V-8 in first three days. Plus a gallon and a half of water. The water was hot, the drinks were hot. It hurt to pour the water over my head. But I am in the desert and I love it.

Spend most of my days chasing the shade. Moving the chair, moving the books, moving the radio. I have been keeping a very alert eye out for snakes and scorpions. Saw a coyote walking by. The quail sing in the mornings and early evenings as they walk by, looking for food.
I have several nearby spots where I can search for gold. I am so excited. I will post when I go out. The next week or 10 days will be too hot to do anything, so I will load up on books, thanks to the Quartzsite library (thanks especially to Billie, the head librarian, who reads as much as I do!).
I will sit in the shade and read. What luxury. What joy.
Yea, I found some. Have a pickle jar filled with concentrates to pan down. It was too heavy to put in suitcase so my daughter will bring it down next month. It will keep me busy for a while. Bout to start a class in the morning to get my amateur radio license. It is only for the next 3 Saturdays and then after that I will be hitting the beaches. The hurricanes really moved some sand over the last few months so this will give me a chance to try out the 52in LED light bar mounted on my truck bed rack.
Cheers,
Sand Scoop Dan

That heat can be the best thing for my aching old bones I have been told. I have a friend who moved from Canada to Mesa and loves the desert. It takes getting use to I hear. Scorpions oh ya eeeek. Those wild boars that run in the night forget what they are called but ya they have a smell to them too. Sounds wonderful the adventures you take on. This is perfect price and the amenities are great too. Hope you find some gold!!

Ah, yes. Heat on old bones. A treat.
Other desert treats: I grew up in the “low country” of South Carolina. Mold on leather was constant there. Here I could leave a bag of chips open and a month later they would be still crisp. (I would actually never leave food open. Mice, ants, etc.) In the dry desert I have found that I can wear the same clothes much longer. Washing and drying my hair is a quick treat. I have all solar, so the desert is full of sun energy. One of the biggest plus of the desert is the plant, and animal life. Astounding resilience. And the magic of rain when it happens is delicious.
Scorpions are not too easy to avoid. I wear sandals so that they can’t hide, like they want to do, in regular shoes. I shake out every dish towel before using. The snakes are pretty shy and really don’t want to bite. I just have to be aware of where I step. Love looking at them.
Finding gold will be the icing on the cake! Thanks for reading the blog and commenting.
